HRTG Update - April 2020

HR Tech Group Update
April 2020

Hello everyone,

What a difficult and unprecedented time for many of us. We are under tremendous pressure as our organizations turn to our HR teams to lead the way in keeping employees safe and healthy at work, whether that’s in a workplace or at home. You’re being asked to lead the way in managing remote workforces and maintaining morale and in developing and managing cost cutting measures. Many of you are leading the way in remote hiring, onboarding and training.

This is an incredible pivot for all of us, and we’re doing it mostly in isolation from our homes, while our own lives have been turned sideways and for many now also include full time childcare and schooling. Deep breath...

I want to let you know what HR Tech Group is doing during this time.

Many activities are business as usual for us.

We are currently running our Benefits Survey with HUB International. This survey provides valuable, detailed benefits information and it’s only done once every two years. Don’t miss out! You only get the results if you participate. We have extended the deadline to April 9th.

Our mentoring program is in full swing and now more than ever, those connections are valuable. Mentors and mentees - Please continue to meet, remotely of course, and join us for the April 9th mid-cycle virtual program check-in.

The D&I Tech Project is going strong. We’re building the Resource HUB, developing C-Suite training curriculum and will soon release two more videos highlighting careers in tech. Our two pilot D&I Training programs were unfortunately stalled mid-delivery, but our program provider, Refinery Leadership, is working on plan B so the participants can complete those courses.  We’ll be measuring diversity through our salary survey process as planned, and Veza Strategy is starting a second round of D&I audits for tech companies.

We’re not hosting in-person meetings, obviously, so our SIGs, learning events and training are now online when possible. When not possible, they are being postponed.  Dare to Lead Workshop participants – be sure to let Tara know your preferred format for finishing the course.  Our Summer Socials likely won’t happen this year… But we’ll wait and see!

We are delighted to welcome many new member companies in the first quarter of the year, including five life sciences companies! We'll be hosting a new member orientation webinar on April 14th.

In the Greater Vancouver Area, a big welcome to Loop Energy, Signal Chem Lifesciences, Contextual Genomics, Appneta, Intrinsyc Software, Angiotech Pharma, CTO.ai, Greenlane Renewables, Aspect Biosystems and Traction Guest.

On Vancouver Island, we're delighted to welcome Aurinia Pharmaceuticals and Kano as new members. Our Vancouver Island members are all invited to connect during a virtual roundtable discussion on April 16th.

Two Alberta companies have joined our association as well. Welcome to Aimsio and Dynamic Risk!

Our Salary Survey will have even more data this year, with the addition of 17 new positions, Alberta incumbents and more. All BC companies with operations in Alberta are invited to submit their Alberta data into the 2020 survey. If this is of interest, you are welcome to join our webinar on Tuesday, April 7 to learn more about the expansion of our tech sector salary survey into Alberta.

We are very pleased to welcome UBC Sauder School of Business as a new sponsor for HR Tech Group! We look forward to partnering with the Sauder team.

What’s new?

We’re working hard to provide the evolving support you need.

Our COVID-19 pop-up SIG is proving very helpful for members. We will be holding another SIG call on April 14th. Thank you to Monica Tsai at Kabam for leading this!

We are organizing three member webinars during April, each providing valuable information and resources to support you in navigating this situation. Registration details available or coming soon, on our Events page.

  1. Morneau Shepell’s Total Wellbeing EAP Solution - April 15th
  2. Legislation and legal matters regarding the Pandemic, with Fasken – date TBD
  3. Keeping employees productive, energized & resilient working from home, with Mandy King, HEAL – date TBD

As requested during our most recent COVID Response SIG, we’re running a COVID-19 Employer Response Survey. Please have one person from your HR team take 10 minutes to complete the survey by April 8. We are asking for a very tight turnaround on responses so that we can get this information back to you within a few days.

Our Slack Workspace is proving to be a valuable communication tool. Join the COVID-19 Resource Support channel to collaborate with peers and learn, find resources and more.

Our community is more important than ever during this time.
