HRTG Update October 2019

HR Tech Group Update
October 2019

Hello HR Tech Group members,

A warm welcome to our new association members:  Monstercat, FPS Food Process Solutions, Codan Communications, Mastercard Technology, Beanworks, Safe Software, Channel Gate Technologies, Article, VanCity, Trulioo and Fingerfoods.

It was wonderful to see so many members at our Tech Talent Conference and other recent events. What a productive fall!

BC’s talent market is hot, hot, hot and that was clearly illustrated in our 2019 BC Tech Salary Survey. Comparing our data to Mercer’s national data showed that Vancouver’s median R&D and Software salaries are now higher than both Toronto and Montreal! Headcounts are growing too, especially in sub-sectors like Cleantech and Digital Media and Gaming which are expecting 19% and 18% growth respectfully. The Digital Media and Gaming sub-sector also saw median salaries increase by 6.6%. Our press release has further info.

Delivering data is an important part of our mission as an organization. This year we added turnover data to our salary survey, which I hope you will find valuable.

On September 26th we held our 8th Tech Talent Conference. Some highlights from the conference were Leonard Brody’s lunchtime keynote on The Great Rewrite, Katherine Lazaruk’s break-out session titled No One Sees Your Skills: Leveraging a Strong Professional Presence and those heavenly chair massages by Simply Relax! During our cocktail reception we were also treated to a spectacular air show by the Royal Air Force’s Aerobatic team, the Red Arrows. Below are a few photos from the conference.

We have two in-person events coming up in November. Immigration Pathways to Hire Global Talent is happening in Vancouver on November 13th and Becoming More Conscious of your Unconscious Bias is happening in Victoria on November 19th.

Our Diversity and Inclusion Tech Project is well under way. Over 100 people came from near and far to join our D&I Project Coalition launch and offer their support. Soon we will be asking HR Tech Group member companies to engage their employees in self-reporting demographic data so that we can benchmark diversity in our sector. Stay tuned for self-reporting communication samples and tools. We are also currently looking for content for our D&I Resource HUB. If you have content you can share, please reach out to Kathy Gibson, Project Manager at

Our Steering Committee and staff have been implementing a number of new programs and initiatives as result of the 2019 Member Satisfaction Survey feedback. We have a new member benefit offering: Business Insurance Solutions through Willis Towers Watson. Details were sent out a couple of days ago and will be posted on our website shortly. Later this month, we’re kicking off a leadership development program: Coach Approach to Leadership, with Winning Academy. The program is full but stay tuned for other leadership development program offerings in 2020.

Webinars were also requested in the survey feedback and are proving popular. Our next webinar, Kindness is the New Morale with Olivia McIvor, is on November 6th. Registration details coming soon. We are reviewing our salary survey positions with an aim to better meeting the needs of each of our tech sub-sectors. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on positions. We will also be refreshing our benefits survey in 2020 to ensure it is providing the data you need.

Our SLACK channel is proving to be a valuable communication tool. Members are sharing tips and resources and discussing employer positions on current events like the Climate Strike. If you want to join the conversations but don’t know where to begin… begin here:!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or to Nikol (our Member Specialist) if you have ideas or questions. I can be reached at and Nikol can be reached at or

All the best this fall,

Stephanie Hollingshead
